Workshop: Ceramic Tile Painting
Friday 2 June 2017
This two hour workshop will take place in the Garden Room at the Swiss Garden and will be led by Eve Carroll (Ceramic Artist and Tutor).
Participants will be encouraged to sketch out a design at the start of the session, taking account of their own particular interests; this might include drawing flowers or birds found in the garden or even looking at designs that are incorporated within the garden itself.
Eve will be on hand to guide participants through the drawing process as required. Once the designs have been sketched onto paper, participants can then begin to transfer the drawings onto the ‘6 inch Square Tile’. Starting with a blank, unglazed ceramic tile, participants will learn all the techniques they need to start painting onto the ceramic surface. All ceramic paints used are water-based and there will be a wide range of soft, natural colours to choose from.
Once the tiles have been painted, they will be left to dry and coated with a layer of transparent glaze back at Eve’s studio. The tiles are then fired in the kiln to 1100 degrees centigrade, making them both functional to use as well as being highly decorative.
The glazed tiles will be packaged and participants can collect from the Visitor Centre after two weeks.
