The Secret War and the Lysander
Saturday 29 September
Guided tour with Jim Box & John Chalmers
This guided tour around The Collection is focused on the secret war and the Lysander’s role in it. Please pre-book as places are limited.
In 1940, after the fall of France, Churchill’s plans to ‘set Europe ablaze’ included the formation of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) to help wage a secret war against Hitler’s armies.
SOE Agents were recruited from a variety of backgrounds and locations throughout the United Kingdom and trained in espionage, sabotage and irregular warfare. Once training was completed, agents were required to operate in occupied territory throughout Europe and part of the support network to get them there included using the Lysander aircraft, with its short take-off and landing capability, which made it perfect for this type of role.
This guided tour and talk is hosted at the Old Warden Aerodrome. The Shuttleworth Collection, has one of the 2 current airworthy examples of the Lysander aircraft as its centrepiece. Our knowledgeable guides will share information on the design and activity of this historic aircraft and familiarise you with the heroic exploits of the pilots that flew them.
The normal applicable Collection entry rate is payable in addition to this (i.e. SVAS, Adult, Concession, Combined). Please pay this in the Visitor Centre upon arrival.
