Michael Portillo stopped off at Biggleswade railway station for the latest series of Great British Railway Journeys and where better to visit than Shuttleworth! Local author Christine Hill introduced the history of Swiss Garden from Lord Ongley’s Swiss vision and its influence on the surrounding village of Old Warden and its inhabitants. The visit took in some of the 13 listed structures including Swiss Cottage, wildlife playing on the ponds, and the overall beauty and tranquility of this outstanding example of a Regency landscapes in a picturesque alpine style.

Once out of the Swiss Garden Michael made a skilled show of driving The Shuttleworth Collection’s 1901 Locomobile Steam Car under the guidance of Vehicle Collection manager Stuart Gray. The Locomobile was bought by Richard Shuttleworth around 1932, who drove it in the London to Brighton run, and may well do so again.

Filming took place during our Season Finale Race Day on 2 October 2016, but visitors can enjoy the picturesque Swiss Garden and the exhibits of The Collection all year round!

Great British Railway Journeys screens on BBC 2, look out for Season 8 episode 2! Available on iPlayer until the end of January 2017.
