Notes for Visiting Pilots

Welcome to Old Warden and the Shuttleworth Collection. This is a private unlicensed aerodrome. PPR at all times. Pilots use the aerodrome at their own risk.

Aerodrome Information

Runway: 03/21
Only this runway is available to visiting pilots.
Circuit Direction – 21-Left Hand 03-Right Hand
Circuit Height-800 feet

Aerodrome Elevation: 110ft AMSL

All aircraft are to make a Standard Overhead Join and Visual Circuit to permit any model flying to cease
Runway 03: TORA - 511m. ASDA - 628m
Runway 21: TORA - 628m ASDA - 648m

Runway 03 has a marked down slope, the effective landing distance is reduced.

Keep a good look out for aircraft that may be test flying or carrying out a practise display

Old Warden operates unlicensed except by special arrangement

The starter extension south of College Drive is not available to visiting pilots. High-sided vehicles often use College Drive that is a private road. The approach to Runway 21 is over a public road.

Trees infringe the Approach Slope to Runway 21 and Take-off Slope for Runway 03.

EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION.

Pilots are to vacate the runway to the North West as soon as practicable unless advised by Air Traffic Services. Do not back-track the runway. Use the mown taxiways. Exercise caution when taxiing in case of surface damage by animals. Park well clear of all runways. Book in at the Shuttleworth shop or at the base of the Tower on Display days.
Shuttleworth (Old Warden) is situated in a rural area. Low flying and/or aerobatics are not to be carried out within 3 Nm of the airfield.

Communication Frequency:   130.7 MHz

The service is normally only manned on Display days and occasional events subject to staffing levels.
Primary       Aerodrome Flight Information Service (Call sign – Old Warden INFORMATION)
Secondary     Radio Service (Call sign – Old Warden RADIO)


Display Days and Special Events

Pilots are required to pre book in advance through the Shuttleworth Collection office. The pilot has ultimate responsibility for the safe conduct of his aircraft and passengers. Pilots are reminded that it is their responsibility to ensure the safe and efficient conduct of flight and avoidance of collisions whilst operating on the airfield and within the ATZ. Animals are not permitted. An adult must accompany any child under 14 years of age.
Please note that The Shuttleworth Collection aircraft normally operate Non-Radio and have access to all runways.
Arrivals Procedures

  • Upon first contact with Air Traffic Services, please state your Aircraft details and Booking reference. Should you not be able to uphold your slot, it is courteous to advise the organisation early, as others are often keen to visit. Pilots should be aware that a practice display might be in progress and using a conflicting runway. Air Traffic Services will advise and may request a delay in arrival.
  • Non-Radio aircraft are required to arrive within their pre-advised ETA (+/-10mins). Non-Radio traffic is advised to observe for traffic that may be making a practice display and using a conflicting runway. Please lookout for Light signals.
  • Plan to carry out a Standard Overhead Join and Visual Circuit until in radio contact. Please keep a good look out for other aircraft, as there are often NON RADIO aircraft in the vicinity.
  • Pilots are to vacate the runway to the North West as soon as practicable, unless otherwise notified by Air Traffic Services. Please use the mown taxiways.
  • The last available time for arrival is 1 hour prior to the start of the display
On the Airfield
  • All movements on the manoeuvring area require the approval of “Old Warden Information” with specific reference to entering or crossing any runway. Marshals or a member of the security team may provide additional supervision. On display days all visiting pilots are requested to Book-in at the Office at the base of the Visual Room. Identification labels are issued solely to permit you and your passengers to return to your aircraft before departure. Approval is required from Air Traffic Services before returning to your aircraft. Fuel 100LL (AVGAS) is available on cash payment. If fuel is required, please request immediately upon your arrival.
Departure
  • Visiting aircraft will not be allowed to depart until after the display is ended.
  • Before taxiing, you are required to contact Air Traffic Services. If Non-radio please observe Light Signals. Please note that all runways are active (NB. 12/30 and 07/25) and that approval is required before crossing. Observe also the marshals.
  • Report when No. 1 at the HOLD  for the departure runway.
  • Contact with Air Traffic Services is mandatory before entering or crossing any runway and taking off please satisfy yourself of no confliction.
