1890’s ‘Hayes’ Patent’ Straw Elevator

This form of elevator is arranged to take up the short straw and cavings with the long straw. It is made for straight delivery only, and was available in four sizes, namely 18ft, 20ft, 22ft and 24ft. It was a very successful design and was awarded a prize by the Royal Agricultural Society.

This elevator is believed to date from the 1890s based upon images in Clayton & Shuttleworth catalogues.

It was purchased by the Shuttleworth Trust in about 2006 and displayed in its unrestored state at our airshows and the Bedfordshire County Steam Fair (pictured below).

It has now been restored on to full working order by our Clayton & Shuttleworth Heritage team (all volunteers), and made its debut at the Great Dorset Steam Fair 2019 (header image) as part of their ‘City of Lincoln’ arena, followed by our Vintage Airshow on 1 September 2019.
