1920’s Rickshaw

The Collection’s exhibit

This exhibit is a ‘Jinriksha’, which is a small two wheeled passenger carriage drawn by a person. In India rickshaws were operated by drivers running on foot pulling the vehicle behind them. They were outlawed by the government with the exceptions being within the city of Calcutta where the union refused to comply with the ban.

This vehicle has no records to show where it originated but as the Shuttleworth family were well travelled it is likely they brought it home from an overseas trip.
