“And now here come the daffodils, The trumpeters of spring…” (Charles A Heath – Daffodils)
21 March – 4 April 2021
There is nothing quite as cheerful and uplifting as a daffodil. Here at the Swiss Garden, thousands of these beautiful golden blooms can be seen flowering from late February through to April. We have decided to shine a light on the lovely Narcissus family and showcase our growing collection of them by hosting our first ever Daffodil Festival.
Take a spring-themed horticultural tour with our talented Head Gardener, find out more about the Swiss Garden’s past and recent restoration on a history tour, or listen to a talk by Daffodil specialist Johnny Walkers and find out what his ‘Desert Island Daffodils’ would be – not an easy choice apparently!
If you prefer, simply pick up a self-guided Daffodil Trail leaflet when you arrive, and walk around at leisure taking in the beauty of the daffodils and other spring flowering plants as well as the garden’s lovely views. Look out for some named daffodil varieties such as ‘Cheerfulness’, ‘Golden Joy’ and ‘Rip Van Winkle’ – we have selected ten of our best for you to find and enjoy.
There are also options to download an audio guide or look up the garden’s history on our very own Swiss Garden app. A children’s trail will lead younger visitors on a fun and fascinating journey around the site, while here and there, snippets of daffodil-themed poetry might inspire you to write your own!
Beyond the garden gates, enjoy a stroll around the peaceful Woodland Walk, with its views across the Serpentine Lake. Spot the Boat House and views of the Mansion and its distinctive clocktower beyond. Wander up the Shrubbery Walk and find more daffodils and some significant trees planted in memory of Shuttleworth family members. The wider parkland is stunning, and well worth seeing – parts of it are accessible and offer longer walks for those wanting to stretch their legs.
Daffodils really are for everyone, and we hope you will visit during the festival and celebrate these beautiful flowers with us. We don’t know about you, but after a long winter of dark days, we are all ready for some daffodil joy.
Access to the daffodil festival is included in your daily admissions ticket.
