‘My Desert Island Daffodils’

An illustrated talk by Chelsea award-winning daffodil expert Johnny Walkers

Sunday 21 March 2021

Johnny Walkers is the son of a Dutch bulb grower and was brought up in the bulb growing area of South Lincolnshire, so has been involved with bulb growing all his life.  He began to specialise in daffodils when he joined a Spalding based bulb co-operative as Quality Manager. He became responsible for technical and quality issues for 100 growers spread from Cornwall to Lincolnshire.  The company handled 5000 tonnes of daffodils per year, a large proportion of which were exported to Europe, Scandinavia and the USA.  In 1986 Johnny set up a mail order company specialising in new and unusual daffodils and started showing daffodils at the Chelsea Flower Show.  When he retired in 2018 he had 25 successive Chelsea Gold Medals to his name.

As the title of the talk suggests, Johnny will discuss a selection of daffodils that he would choose to have with him if stranded on a desert island.  It would need to be a decent-sized island because there are around 25 different varieties covering the season and designed to give him 5 months of colour!

This event is suitable for people aged 16+
