Tour content

The Shuttleworth Collection has one of the 2 current airworthy examples of the Lysander aircraft as its centrepiece. Our knowledgeable guides will share information on the design and activity of this historic aircraft and familiarise you with the heroic exploits of the pilots that flew them.

In 1940, after the fall of France, Churchill’s plans to ‘set Europe ablaze’ included the formation of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) to help wage a secret war against Hitler’s armies.

SOE Agents were recruited from a variety of backgrounds and locations throughout the United Kingdom and trained in espionage, sabotage, and irregular warfare. Once training was completed, agents were required to operate in occupied territory throughout Europe and part of the support network to get them there included using the Lysander aircraft, with its short take-off and landing capability, which made it perfect for this type of role.

Jim regularly delivers talk on this subject, adding new content and artifacts wherever possible, and he’s always interested in personal stories connected to this subject.
