National Gardens Scheme (NGS) Open Day
Shuttleworth Collection & Gardens is delighted to be opening for the National Gardens Scheme again this year. Visitors on the day will be able to access the beautiful Swiss Garden and also the Trust’s extensive collection of vintage aircraft and motor vehicles housed in the adjacent hangars. We are pleased to support the NGS and all admission fees on the day will be donated to the charity.
2022 saw a return to near normality for garden opening and visiting for the first time in three years and despite a prolonged drought over the summer that led many gardens to close, the National Garden Scheme announced donations totalling £3.11 million to its beneficiary charities. Their core beneficiaries include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and the Queen’s Nursing Institute.
The NGS are passionate about the physical and mental health benefits of gardens and also support charities doing amazing work in gardens and health and grant bursaries to help community gardening projects.
Early spring highlights in the Swiss Garden include snowdrops, hellebores, scented shrubs and some Rock Garden delights such as Iris reticulata. Early daffodils are in flower too, blazing a trail for later varieties, swathes of which cover many of the garden’s banks and lawns in April and May. For tree lovers, the garden contains several county champions including a rare group of weeping hollies and an imposing Cedar of Lebanon, the tallest in Bedfordshire.
Admission will be at the discounted rate of £10.00 per adult*, with children and RHS members FREE! The Runway Café will be open, serving a range of light refreshments.
*Tickets valid for 2 March only
