National Gardens Scheme (NGS) Open Day

Shuttleworth is delighted to be opening for the National Gardens Scheme again this year.  Visitors on the day will be able to access the beautiful Swiss Garden and also the Trust’s extensive collection of vintage aircraft and motor vehicles housed in the adjacent hangars.  We are pleased to support the NGS and all admission fees on the day will be donated to the charity.

The NGS have donated over £63 million in total to nursing and health charities and made an annual donation of over £3 million in 2021 despite the ongoing restrictions and uncertainties around garden opening.  Their core beneficiaries include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and the Queen’s Nursing Institute.

The NGS are passionate about the physical and mental health benefits of gardens and also support charities doing amazing work in gardens and health and grant bursaries to help community gardening projects.

Autumn interest in the Swiss Garden consists of lovely leaf colour on trees, including our stunning Acer palmatum and Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Frisia’ on the East Lawn, and splashes of colour from some late flowering plants such as Colchicum autumnale (Autumn Crocus) and Sternbergia lutea in the Rock Garden.  Evergreen trees dominate the landscape in winter and the garden contains several county champions including a rare group of weeping hollies and an imposing Cedar of Lebanon, the tallest in Bedfordshire.

Admission will be at the discounted rate of £10.00 per adult*, with free entry for children, The Friends of The Swiss Garden, The Shuttleworth Veteran Aeroplane Society and RHS members! The Runway Café will be open, serving a range of light refreshments.

*Tickets valid for 3 November only
