Summer Evening 2024

Our summer evening air show theme returns for another year of exciting displays, family friendly fun, and the guaranteed relaxed atmosphere only found at the Old Warden Aerodrome.

Witness The Collection aircraft and exciting visitors take the skies, explore the history behind some of our most iconic vehicles and machines, and get up close and personal with some aviation icons as we see the return of our much loved ‘Paddock Uncovered’ experience.

The Old Warden Aerodrome is unique in itself, sporting one of the only remaining grass airfields in the country. It offers a unique setting in the heart of the Bedfordshire countryside with picturesque views and stunning scenery that provides a perfect backdrop to our spectacular air displays.

If it is variety you’re after, the vast Shuttleworth site truly has something for all interest types, look through the list below for more information.

Interactive Discovery Zones

The Discovery Zones at Shuttleworth air displays are buzzing with engaging interactives aimed at all ages.

The very young are really excited to be given the chance to pilot the Joystick Club’s awesome pedal planes. The disappointment felt by those too tall to fit in them is soon tempered by the opportunity to construct and launch their own stomp rocket with YES or to design and build their own chuck-glider with Time & Space Learning.

Simulators are always popular, be it the British Gliding Association’s K13 cockpit simulator, WAHT’s superbly visceral Rocking Nacelle WW1 cockpit sim or the Joystick Club’s incredible Tomahawk and Seneca cockpit sims.

It is not all about flying, though – Shuttleworth’s Discovery Team will always have a really fun activity for you to build and take away, such as their ever-popular pop-pop steam boats or rapid racers.  Budding artists of all ages can try their hand at creating a work of art with the Art for All Roadshow. And those who like their creations to be on a smaller scale can sit down with IPMS Brampton for the free Airfix Make n’ Paint workshops.

New for 2024

Build a 1/3 scale Hawker Hurricane with Sci-Hi Education, immerse yourself in the Mark Rutherford School’s Incredible Planetarium, have creative fun with the Charlie Moore Art Club and Time & Space Learning’s Aer0naut School.

Shuttleworth Swiss Garden

Enjoy a walk through ornate ironwork gates into a delightful Regency and Victorian layered garden. Discover a green and pleasant idyll, with a fascinating history dating back to its creation at the start of the nineteenth century.  There is plenty to enjoy in every corner of the garden, whether it be the brightly decorated Indian Kiosk, the quirky Swiss Cottage, or the magical Grotto & Fernery with its own micro climate and unique variety of exotic plants.

Vehicle Parade

A staple of our air shows at Shuttleworth is our vehicle parade displaying our much loved collection of vintage cars & motorcycles across our airfield showing the history and development of the internal combustion engine from the 19th & 20th Century!

Vintage Bus Rides

Over the weekend of the Festival of Flight we will be running our vintage buses between various locations helping everyone to get around the Collection’s site.  Simply step aboard for a unique experience on one of our Edwardian buses that are all over 100 years old.  Or you can travel in style in a 20-minute ride to the House and back in our 1913 Studebaker Light Four, which was imported to the UK to appear in the 1981 film ‘Ragtime’ starring James Cagney.  Look along the hangars for stops for the buses and the Studebaker!

Day tickets for vintage bus rides: £5 per person (accompanied children go free!). Your ticket will permit unlimited rides on the day of purchase.

Tickets for Studebaker: £25 for a family ticket (for up to 4 people, at the driver’s discretion)

All ticket proceeds go towards the running and maintenance of the collection’s vehicles

Ground Attractions

Shuttleworth’s popular ‘Uncovered Paddock’ is back, join us on the airfield for an up close look at the aircraft that will be displaying at the show.

Bofors Gun Discovery Zone

Visitors can experience what is was like to work the Bofors Gun in one of our most popular exhibits with our Airfield Defence Section replicating the backbone of aerial defence in wartime Britain. Try your hand at tracking targets alongside your family and friends manually operating Bofors gun itself and experience loading the 22lbs ammunition clips. The Bofors team will also show you how this weapons system worked alongside telescopes, search lights and small arms.
