Schneider EoN Primary
Elliots of Newbury (EoN), founded as a joinery company in 1870 and a furniture manufacturer between the two World Wars, had been involved in the production of aircraft components during World War II, with a largely female workforce. After the war the Government’s austerity programme would not allow an immediate return to furniture manufacture so, with their aircraft experience and having in 1945 sub-contracted to build glider wings for another firm, they turned to glider production.
The EoN Primary was one of several chosen designs and was a refined version of the basic German SG38 Schulgleiter. It was marketed towards aero clubs and was adopted in 1948 by the Air Training Corps and Combined Cadet Force as the Eton TX1.
About this aircraft
The Collection’s Primary was restored by SVAS volunteers led by Peter Underwood. It is a regular part of flying displays when the weather allows, and at events when it doesn’t fly it is often mounted on a gimbal to allow visitors to experience sitting in it.
